The WIE Plenary Session is organized in four presentations by four distinguished speakers. Four women industry managers from international companies will give technical presentations on the vision of the future and their company’s strategy in one of the IEEE MELECON 2022 reference topics: Smart Energy, Smart Industry, Smart HealthCare, Smart Digital Communities. At the end of the presentations, there will be a round table, open to a debate and to questions from participants, on the topics proposed in the technical talks. The energy transition: sustainable, digital and equal
All over the world, actions and initiatives are launched to drive the transition to a sustainable future in line with the target of the Paris agreement. This typically involves initiatives for green energy production, energy efficiency improvements, and other technical measures. These solutions show that the energy transition can be technically feasible. But to be successful, it must also be affordable and realizable.
This talk will discuss the key themes and initiatives for the energy transition and why diversity and equality are critical to make the change realizable and sustainable.

When Medicine met Technology: A long love story
Technology and medicine have done already a long walk together. However, in the last years and especially due to Covid 19 this walk is now intensifying. Technology application to different healthcare areas is becoming a daily interaction where different stakeholders (including patients, professionals, authorities, companies and research institutions) are involved and have different needs. The use of technologies at different levels requires a deep orchestration between actors and, also, deep understanding. In the healthcare domain, technology is not yet a commodity, but the time is coming, and we need to be ready. A good example are the different software applications that are in use for different medical services. These applications orchestrate the full working flow of the departments making them move towards paper-free units that facilitates the daily work as well as provides data sources for future developments and research works.
The Carbon offsets verification dilemma and the next generation digital solutions for MRV
Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs) is a vital part of net-zero strategies. When balanced with abatement activities, carbon offsetting can deliver short term positive climate impact. Yet, (VMCs) are fragmented and complex with legal, accounting and compliance measures. In recent years, carbon offsetting has meant expensive, large-scale with little proof of impact. As more businesses look to minimize their climate impact, the use of technology is key in tackling some of the challenges associated with carbon management.
The 17tons solution enhances the transparency, accuracy, efficiency, and value of climate data through digital solutions for collection, calculation, reporting and assurance. Our composable platform combines IOT, AI, and Blockchain.
Internet of Things -Smart sensors are planted among networks of trees to monitor the entire system, including air and soil quality. These sensors support the interconnectivity of each tree’s data with the forest and translate it to the central 17tons platform.
Artificial Intelligence – Machine learning algorithms (AI) aggregate the data from forests and analyze it to certify the amount of carbon removed and value generated.
Blockchain – The translation of data from planted trees onto the blockchain allows for a real-time view of sequestration and biodiversity in an ecosystem. It also creates a permanent record of that tree’s carbon removal for years to come.
Ambra SANNINO is Head of Department of Power Systems Planning for the Northern Europe region in the global service provider DNV, headquartered in Oslo, Norway. Before joining DNV in March 2019, Ambra was with the global manufacturer ABB for ca 15 years, in different roles in R&D and Technology management in the Power Grids division, today part of Hitachi Energy.
Ambra has a Ph.D. in Power Engineering from the University of Palermo in Italy, and a Doctor of Science (Docent) degree from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she also worked for a few years as Associate Professor in Power Systems. She holds ca 10 patents and has co-authored more than 50 papers on power electronics in power systems and distributed generation. Ambra is a Cigré member and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Within IEEE, she is serving as Chair of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) / Power Electronics Society (PELS) Joint Chapter in Sweden, and as Member at Large for IEEE Smart Grid in the Governing Board of PES.
Manuela TACCIA is General Manager at Emerson, Italy. Over 23 years of experience in the process automation industry I have held job responsibilities in marketing, business development, sales as well as general management, covering Italy and Europe for several Business Units, products and solution with experience of strategic plan development and execution. Today I have the full P&L and country responsibility for Emerson Automation Solution Italy covering the position of General Manage and Managing Director. In terms of education I held a Master of Science, Physical Chemistry at University of Milan complemented with other Professional Qualifications in marketing, sales and finance. I strongly believe in Integrity & Trust, the power of Collaboration and the value creation through Diversity Equity & Inclusion, that contributes to the rich exchange of ideas that inspires Innovation. I approach life with a Continuous Improvement perspective and lead with Energy and Passion.
Blanca Jordan is leading the IT department of Fresenius Medical Care in Spain where she oversees the full development and correct functioning of Renal eSuite for their customers. She is Master Telecommunication Engineer by Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. She also holds a Sociology Degree and have completed a Master in Executive Management Development by IESE. Blanca has 20 years of experience in research and development projects funded by the European Commission and other relevant authorities. She counts also with 5 years of experience in technology transfer and innovative solutions design and deployment for different customers including healthcare institutions and pharma companies.
Nahla SALEM is Marketing Manager at 17tons. She is a business development consultant with over 14 years of experience in partnerships management, non-profit fundraising and startups business development, six of which are working with UNICEF. She currently manages global partnerships and Marketing for 17tons, a startup that empowers companies to make better, more ethical climate investments with guaranteed impact using cutting-edge technology. She is also managing the business development and growth in MENA and Europe for Yunus and Youth an organization founded with the support of Professor Muhammad Yunus, Yunus & Youth combines social entrepreneurship training with technology to remove educational barriers between countries and generations.
Dajana CASSIOLI is the Chair of the WIE AG of the IEEE Italy Section. She is an Associate Professor of Telecommunications Engineering at the DISIM – University of L’Aquila, Italy. Her research interests span over wireless communications, 5G/B5G Networks and Cybersecurity. She is the Coordinator of L’Aquila’s Node of the CINI National Laboratory on Cybersecurity. In 2010 and 2016 she has been awarded the ERC-StG VISION and the ERC-PoC iCARE. She is author and co-author of tens of publications on prestigious International Journals and Conferences. She served as the Industry Co-Chair of PIMRC 2018, WIE Chair for RTSI 2018, RTSI 2019, RTSI 2020, MELECON 2020 and 2020 IEEE Int. Workshop for Industry 4.0 and IoT, and as TPC member of several International Conferences (ICC, PIMRC, VTC, GLOBECOM). She is an Editor of the IET Elec. Lett. and IEEE Comm. Lett., and ITL and ETT John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
Simay AKAR is an entrepreneur with corporate industrial background and experience in the energy industry. She specialized in photovoltaic manufacturing, battery storage for electric vehicles and other renewable energy technologies, and the clean energy market’s development. Akar is currently the Chief Commercial Officer & Co-Founder at Innoses. Additional past roles include Sales & Marketing Director of EkoRE – Eko Renewable Energy, Marketing & Business Development Director of GoodWe Turkey, and Head of Overseas Marketing at Talesun Solar. Akar has worked in China and Turkey, and mostly focused on international commercial activities, and has been employed by CSUN Eurasia, Schneider Electric, Arcelik (BEKO), and Lucida Solar. In addition to her professional acclimates, she is an IEEE Senior member, acknowledged volunteer since 2007, and recipient of several prestigious awards. Simay is a graduate of Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and she participated Energy Innovation and Emerging Technologies Program at Stanford University. Akar is 2022 Vice-Chair – Products on the 2022 IEEE Entrepreneurship Steering Committee and was a Social Impact Liaison on the 2021 IEEE Entrepreneurship Steering Committee.
Patrizia LAMBERTI is the vice-Chair of the WIE AG of the IEEE Italy Section. She is Associate Professor of Electrotechnique at the Dept. of Information and Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics – University of Salerno (UniSA), Italy. She is vice-dean of the interdepartmental center NanoMates and scientific representative for UniSA in the Italian interuniversity center ICEmB (Interaction between Electromagnetic fields and biological systems). She is co-founder of the spin-off AI4Health S.r.l. Her research interests concern tolerance analysis and design optimization of electromagnetic (EM) devices, EM modeling and characterization of novel nanomaterial, EM treatment of biological cells and systems by means of Pulsed Electric Field. The research activities lead to more than 50 journal papers, 3 book chapters, 3 Italian, 2 European and 1 USA patents. She was involved in more than 30 national and international scientific projects and she is currently principal investigator from UniSA-side for 5 EU-H2020 founded projects.
Cristina PONTI is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) of Electromagnetics at the Department of Industrial, Electronical, and Mechanical Engineering of “Roma Tre” University, Rome (Italy). She is a member of the IEEE Italy Section Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group. She is an IEEE member, and of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation, Geoscience and Remote Sensing and Women in Engineering Societies. Her main research interests are in the electromagnetic analysis, scattering problems, buried-objects detection, ground-penetrating radar, through-the-wall radar, electromagnetic-bandgap materials, antennas, bioelectromagnetic interaction, and microwave components for high-power applications and nuclear fusion. She has co-authored more than 80 publications in international journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. She is an Associate Editor of the international journal IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation.
